Looking for Information on Structural Wildland Fire Protection

We are a group of fire officials in the California "Bay Area", site ofthe 1991 Oakland/Berkeley fire. We are looking for any informationdirectly related to methods, techniques or systems pertaining tostructure defense during wildfire conditions. We have tons of info on"landscaping for safety", roofing, etc. etc., but can find nothingdirectly related to protecting the home such as foam or sprinklersystems, and so on. Any information or leads that anyone could providewill be keenly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Henry Laney vpcs18a@prodigy.com

Looking for Information on Construction Using Volcanic Ash

I am investigating the utilization of volcanic ash for construction ofdomestic dwellings in the Mt. Pinatubo area, Philippines. Can I ask yourhelp in getting information, references, and bibliographies of researchstudies done in this area (the utilization of volcanic ash forconstruction)? I would appreciate any information you can give me and
Thank you very much!

Looking for Information on Emergency Management Education

I have had a request for information regarding education and trainingcourses that are available in Australia in the area of emergencymanagement. This includes:

  1. Risk and vulnerability assessment which analyse relationships between hazards, community and the physical, social and political environment.
  2. Concepts and principles of emergency management.
  3. Risk management planning.
  4. Risk management implementation.
  5. Risk communication particularly public education and warnings information.
We are looking particularly for: Name of course provider; Course title;Course description; Type of accreditation (if any).

While this is predominantly a request for Australian information, information on courses available anywhere in the world would be mostappreciated.

Looking for Data on Building Losses Due to the Loma Prieta Quake

I am a Ph.D candidate in the Department of Geography and EnvironmentalEngineering at the Johns Hopkins University. For my dissertationresearch, I am developing a simulation model to calculate the direct andindirect economic effects of earthquake-induced building damage. Forthis purpose, I need to collect data regarding the property losses(damage repair costs) for individual buildings in the city ofWatsonville (in Santa Cruz county) following the 1989 Loma Prieta (SanFrancisco) earthquake. Please note that I would like to obtain loss dataon a building-specific level (not one lump sum estimate for totallosses).

Additionally, I would like to obtain data relating damage or loss toloss of function. That is, data describing the effect of damage or losson the productivity of a business.

If your organization has such data, I would greatly appreciate if youcould provide these data. If not, I would appreciate if you couldsuggest agencies, individuals, organizations, etc. which might have suchdata.I can be contacted by the following methods:

Fax : (410) 516-8996

On the Application of Chaos and Complexity Theory to Disaster Management

I thought the members of this list might be interested in a conferencethat I am organizing to examine the contribution that chaos andcomplexity theory might make to managing government responses to majordisasters. The conference is scheduled for May 18-19 here at theCalifornia Research Bureau. It will try to bridge the gap between theoryand practice. Presenters will offer papers on:

Although registration is full at this time, the papers and a summary ofthe following workshop will be published by the Bureau. If you wouldlike a copy please send a letter requesting one to me:

*A Project We Heartily Support*

Dear Colleagues,
I think that it would be valuable to have a list of the serversrelated to emergency management. If you will e-mail me back with the e-mail address, gopher site, anonymous FTP site, or http (mosaic site) ofyour server, I will compile them by subject area and redistribute themfor our common use. Please include a description of the contents ofyour server(s).

It occurred to me (in a meeting that preempted my lunch hour) that there are probably nearly as many of these servers as there areparticipants on this list. Therefore a list of these resources could beof immense value to this community.

My direct e-mail address is: stingley@APWK01G1.NWS.NOAA.GOV

Thank you,

Another Worthwhile Endeavor

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's Emergency Management Institute(EMI) is compiling an annotated list of colleges, universities, andother institutions teaching emergency management courses. Of particularinterest are certificate and degree programs. EMI will us this list torespond to inquiries from persons seeking information on emergencymanagement courses available in their area of the country. A preliminarylist has been compiled, but the institute is soliciting additionalentries. Additionally, EMI asks that anyone interested in or knowing ofcolleagues who may be interested in developing an emergency managementcourse or curriculum or incorporating emergency management informationinto an existing course please contact EMI. EMI would like to providenonfinancial technical assistance. The project officer for thiseffort is Dr. Wayne Blanchard, National Emergency Training Center,EMI, Building N/Room 200, Emmitsburg, MD 21727; (301) 447-1262; fax:(301) 447-1081.
