"Ebola Strikes the Global Village" - A Paper on the Hazards Home Page

As the Natural Hazards Center moves further into the information age, weare trying to offer more and more information electronically. As you know, that process now includes distributing documents via the Internet andWorld Wide Web. As a first venture into actually publishing researchpapers and monographs via the Net, we are now offering a paper by Aldo A.Benini and Janet K. Bradford, "Ebola Strikes the Global Village - TheVirus, the Media, the Organized Response" that can be downloaded from theHazard Center Home Page:

http://adder.colorado.edu/~hazctr/Home.html

The paper is provided in a "Zip" format - i.e., it is compressed and, oncedownloaded, must be unzipped (uncompressed) using the PKZIP program. Theresulting file is a Microsoft Word 6.0 document with graphics and graphsthat can be examined with a Word viewer or printed using Microsoft Word.Anyone having trouble unzipping the file is invited to contact theauthors.

The paper is unedited and presented as received from the authors. Indeed, the paper is being published on the Web not only to disseminate theauthors' findings, but also to elicit suggestions, comments, criticism, and discussion from the hazards community. Benini and Bradford can bereached at abenini@slonet.org.

In the future, the Hazards Center anticipates providing full textmanuscripts, as well as compressed ASCII, Word, WordPerfect, Adobe Acrobat(and other format) documents via the Web. Stay tuned . . .

An Invitation to Publish the Old Fashioned Way

The Australian Emergency Management Institute (AEMI) wishes to inviteInternational contributors to publish papers or articles for the"Australian Journal of Emergency Management" (formerly the "MacedonDigest").

The "Australian Journal of Emergency Management" endeavours to provide aninformation sharing forum for all those involved in disaster/emergencymanagement, but with an Australian focus. It also attempts to includepapers from outside Australia that will enhance in some way the knowledgebase of Australian emergency managers. The journal has a growinginternational and national circulation of 3000 and is published quarterly.

Articles should not exceed 3000 words and material should be provided inMicrosoft Word 6, WordPerfect, or ASCII format. Diagrams or illustrationsshould be provided in bromide format. The journal is published in an A4size.

Please address enquiries or papers to Rob Fleming, Information andResearch Centre, Australian Emergency Management Institute, Mt Macedon VIC3441, Australia; tel: +54 215100; fax: +54 215 273

Looking for Disaster Preparedness Evaluation Questionnaires

Hi! My name is Asha George. I am a doctoral student (of public health) atthe University of Hawaii. My dissertation topic is disaster preparedness, and I will be looking at the population of federal employees here in thestate of Hawaii. I am looking for questionnaires that assess disasterpreparedness, particularly at the worksite. Any help the members of thelist can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Aloha!

PLUM Augments News on Natural Disasters for Communities

Connect to http://www.media.mit.edu/people/elo/plum.html

If you are interested in applications of natural language processingtechniques to news on natural disasters or in the personalization ofdigitally delivered news, you may like to see the approach I have taken inmy Master's Thesis.

Over the last year, I have developed a computer system called PLUM. PLUMaugments, or adds contextual information, to news on natural disasters. The system analyzes incoming articles from wire services and automaticallyrelates reported facts to the reader's home community. In doing so, PLUMcan help the reader better understand the scope of the disaster and thesimilarities between the home country and the disaster-stricken country.

I would be interested in any feedback on this research, in particular frompeople involved in disaster education/management/preparedness.

Thank you,
