A Call from Iran: Information on Community Relocation After Earthquake Needed

Dear Hazard Newsletter Members,

In less than 5 months Iran was hit by three major earthquakes that destroyed about 500 villages. One of the main issues that planners face with the reconstruction process is to make decisions about the relocation of some villages due to physical problems or development goals. There are many important factors that should be considered in such cases. In previous earthquakes we tried to consider all important factors to provide a better decision in this regard, but I think the same problem or question might have been experienced by you in your area. I really appreciate if you have access to such experiences and let us use these experience for a better decision to be made for those who survived.

The most recent earthquake was magnitude 7.1 in Richter scale and so far it is reported that more than 2000 people have been killed and more than 200 villages have been totally damaged.

Seeking Information on Globalization and Hazards: A Message from a New E-Mail List

[The following query is taken from the newly reactivated e-mail list: natural-hazards-disasters@mailbase.ac.uk. For information about this list, send a query to natural-hazards-disasters-request@mailbase.ac.uk.]

I am working on hazards and sustainable development, and am interested in hearing of any papers or meetings dealing with the impact of globalisation on hazards. More specifically, what is the impact of the European single market on hazards? I would welcome any comments on this topic.

Seeking Information Resources for Middle East Gulf Region

My name is John Burton and I work for the ANZ Bank located in Melbourne, Australia. I am currently working on a Disaster Recovery solution that will cater for the Banks representation in the U.A.E., Bahrain, Qatar and Pakistan region of the Middle East. I am looking for information resources than can provide me with environmental, political and social data on these areas that I can factor into my analysis.

Thank you for any help you can provide,
John Burton

Coastal Atlas Web Sites and the CZ97 Conference

Applied Geographics. Inc. (AGI), a Boston-based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) consulting firm, has published two coastal atlases on its homepage at www.appgeo.com. One atlas shows public access to coastal areas in and around Boston and the North Shore of Massachusetts; it shows parks, beaches, and other publicly owned areas, linked to a map and a listing of available recreational opportunities. The other atlas demonstrates Massachusetts shoreline changes since the mid-1800s. AGI will be exhibiting these projects at Coastal Zone 97 (CZ97), an international symposium on coastal and ocean management to be held in Boston, July 20-26, 1997. The CZ97 conference theme is "Spotlight on Solutions"; for more information, contact the CZ97 Coordinator at Conventures, Inc., (617) 439-7700, or visit the conference Web site at http://infinitefaculty.com/cz97.

On the Web

[These are some of the more interesting Web sites we've encountered lately. An extensive list of recommended hazard/disaster sites is included on the Hazard Center site: http://www.colorado.edu/hazards.]

http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/fargoflood/
To address the flooding situation along the Red River, North Dakota State University established an emergency web site entitled the "Fargo Flood Home Page." Behind the site are comprehensive resource materials and links addressing the geology of the region, the history of Red River flooding, and historical perspectives. As the situation developed in Grand Forks, the site evolved to address the emergency relief situation there, and then into southern Manitoba.

http://www.disasterplan.com
This site provides original information as well as numerous links to other sites that address disaster contingency and response planning. Some of the links include a sample business contingency plan from MIT, sample earthquake and tsunami response plans, an article on developing a recovery plan, and another article on "Crisis Communications Strategic Planning."

http://www.mapquest.com
For those of you who are map lovers (as are we), if you haven't already, be sure to look at this site. Starting with the entire globe, you can begin zooming in until you actually identify, say, a good Italian restaurant in Missoula, Montana (there is one!). Many other capabilities are available.
