Ann-Margaret Esnard is a professor and director of the Visual Planning Technology Lab at the Florida Atlantic University School of Urban and Regional Planning. Esnard’s expertise encompasses GIS and spatial analysis, coastal vulnerability assessment, displacement vulnerability, land use planning, and disaster planning. She has been involved in a number of research initiatives and is the principal investigator for two National Science Foundation-funded studies—one on hurricane-related population displacement, housing, and land development policy issues in eight coastal states and another, Haitian-Americans as Critical “Bridges” and “Lifelines” for Recovery and Rebuilding in Haiti.

Esnard has written on topics that include vulnerability assessments of coastal and flood hazards, population displacement vulnerability, quality of life and holistic disaster recovery, environmental justice, spatial analysis, GIS education, and public participation GIS. She served on a number of committees, including the Steering Committee for Evaluation of the National Flood Insurance Program and the Disasters Roundtable of the National Academy of Sciences. She is currently a member of the Florida Post-Disaster Redevelopment Planning Initiative, and the National Research Council’s Committee on Private-Public Sector Collaboration to Enhance Community Disaster Resilience. She holds degrees in Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy and Soils, and Regional Planning.
