Jones is the first National Weather Service (NWS) societal impacts meteorologist. His first major effort was to launch the Societal Applications For Enhanced Readiness (SAFER) program. The SAFER program is designed to improve NWS decision support and mission delivery by integrating social science principles into NWS products and services. He recently served as the first national NWSChat Manager and he now leads the Iris Application Framework project.

Jones is a graduate of University of South Alabama where he earned a bachelor’s in meteorology. He is alumni of the 2003 SR BLAST program and a summer 2009 alumni of WAS*IS. He began his career with the National Weather Service in 1999 at the Mobile, Ala. office, and has worked at the Forecast Offices in Corpus Christi and Birmingham as well. He is currently at the NWS Western Region Headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.
