Rick Weil
Rick Weil is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. His fields of interest are community sociology, political sociology, social survey research, and social theory. He has completed research on social capital, as well as the history of social thought.
Weil’s current research focuses on community recovery from Hurricane Katrina. His recent articles on include, “The Rise of Community Organizations, Citizen Engagement, and New Institutions;” “New Orleans Index: New Orleans at Five;” “The Role of Community in Disaster response: Conceptual Models;” and “The FEMA Trailer Parks: Negative Perceptions and the Social Structure of Avoidance.” He also published articles in the American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Theory and Society, and others. He has edited three volumes of Research on Democracy and Society.
Weil attended Harvard and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He was assistant professor of sociology at the University of Chicago from 1981 to 1987 and has been at LSU in Baton Rouge since 1987.
