Margaret Fowke works in the Office of Strategic Planning and Policy of the National Weather Service. She serves as registered dietitian and emergency medical technician in the Washington, D.C. area and is involved in emergency medical services and hospital research examining “geoenvironmental diabetology.” This is new area of medical research examining how geophysical phenomena impacts metabolic control, medications, and supplies among chronic disease patients such as diabetics.

Weather information can be used adjust medications and treat patients during EMS transport. It results in economic solutions to many weather-related infrastructure issues currently facing U.S. hospitals, emergency services, and clinics.

Fowke is also working on the Hospital Weather Guidebook(ITAL) which uses NWS forecast data and products to educate and train the U.S. medical community on pre-weather impact medical decisions. Prior to working at NWS, Margaret worked as registered dietitian in the Grady Hospital Diabetes Unit in Atlanta, Georgia for 10 years.
