John Gaynor currently works in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Research Office of Policy, Planning, and Evaluation. He monitors and evaluates research to operation transitions in NOAA, acts as a focal point in NOAA Research for social science research and contributes to general weather research prioritization and planning in NOAA.

Before this position, Gaynor was NOAA’s director of the Office of Weather and Air Quality in the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research where he implemented the NOAA U.S. Weather Research Program, a cooperative program that supports research that accelerates improvements in forecasts of high-impact weather, such as hurricanes and other severe storms. He also assisted in the national and international planning and coordinating of THORPEX, a global atmospheric research program.

Gaynor has been active on the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy Subcommittee for Disaster Reduction under the Committee for Environment and Natural Resources and served on the Advisory Committee for the Natural Hazards Center and on the Advisory Board of the National Academies Disasters Roundtable.
