Najmedin MeshkatiNajmedin Meshkati

Najmedin (Najm) Meshkati is a professor of civil and environmental engineering, as well as industrial and systems engineering at the Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California. He was a Jefferson Science Fellow and a senior science and engineering advisor in the Office of Science and Technology, and adviser to the U.S. Secretary of State from 2009 to 2010. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering/National Research Council’s Committee on the Analysis of Causes of the Deepwater Horizon Explosion, Fire, and Oil Spill to Identify Measures to Prevent Similar Accidents in the Future.

For the past 25 years, Meshkati has taught and researched risk reduction and reliability enhancement of complex technological systems, including nuclear power, aviation, and the petrochemical and transportation industries. He has written many articles on human factors, safety culture, and accident causation.

He is an elected Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society(HFES), an AT&T Faculty Fellow in Industrial Ecology, a NASA Faculty Fellow (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), and the 2007 recipient of the HFES Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award.
