Juan Pablo Sarmiento is a research scientist and professor at the Latin American and Caribbean Center, College of Arts & Sciences and the Stempel School of Public Health located at Florida International University.

He has more than 27 years of professional, research experience and has published in the fields of health, health education, risk assessment, and disaster management in Latin America and the Caribbean. His work encompasses a wide range of activities, including the design and execution of mitigation programs, early warning systems, damage assessment and needs analyses, and emergency response. He also has extensive experience in the evaluation of health and nutrition systems, institutional capacity building in disaster-prone countries, and post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction programs, with a special emphasis on shelters and environmental recovery.

Sarmiento has worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA), Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombian Red Cross, Colombian Ministry of Health, Colombian Central Military Hospital and the Colombia’s Civil Defense.

Sarmiento, a medical doctor, is a graduate from the University of the Rosario, with studies in Disaster Management at Oxford, Great Britain, High Level Public Administration from the Colombian Superior School of Public Administration; a master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of the Sabana, Colombia; a residence in nutrition at Tufts University and a master’s degree in Project Administration from the University for International Cooperation, Costa Rica.
