Len Ackland is director emeritus of the Center for Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado Boulder. From 1984-1991 he was editor and chief executive officer of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists magazine, which under his direction won the National Magazine Award in 1987 for coverage of the Chernobyl nuclear plant accident. Before the Bulletin, Ackland was a reporter at the Chicago Tribune, the Des Moines Register and other publications. He is author of Making a Real Killing: Rocky Flats and the Nuclear West (University of New Mexico Press, 2nd ed., 2002). Among his achievements are the George Polk Award for Local Reporting (1978), a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Research & Writing Grant (1990), and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship (2008).
