Sherri Brokopp Binder is a doctoral candidate in the Community and Cultural Psychology program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Binder’s research is focused on community resilience and disaster recovery, with an emphasis on non-Western cultural contexts. She conducted a case study of the 2009 South Pacific tsunami in American Samoa for her master’s thesis, and for her dissertation she is conducting a mixed-methods study of a home buyout program being implemented in New York in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Prior to returning to school to pursue her Ph.D. Binder served for seven years as the Sustainable Cities Division Director at the Urban Ecology Institute, an environmental policy institute in Boston, MA. She also holds an M.A. in Sustainable International Development from Brandeis University and a B.A. in International Affairs from Kennesaw State University.
