Steven Jensen is an advisor in emergency management and lecturer at California State University at Long Beach. He brings to this work thirty years of international experience in emergencies and disasters, supported by an understanding of the field and broader global trends. Jensen is in a unique position to advance emergency management by preparing the next generation to understand and work with emerging patterns of disaster.

He began his career in 1979 in the refugee camps of Southeast Asia with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which inspired his pursuit of emergency management. His work has been primarily in New Zealand and the United States, but he has also served in Australia, China, Japan, Mexico and El Salvador.

Jensen has a doctorate in Policy, Planning and Development from the University of Southern California. His research interests are at the intersection of globalization, hazards, and resilience. A highlight for him is serving on the Scientific Advisory Council of the Red Cross.
