Yoshiaki Kawata is Director and Professor, Research Center for Social Safety Science, Kansai University and also Founding Director, The great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial, Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution. He was Director of Disaster Prevention Research Institute in 2005-2007 and now he is Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University. He received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree and PhD from Kyoto University. More than 700 technical papers and 50 books were published in the fields of integrated disaster reduction systems of catastrophic disasters including urban disasters and their emergency management. He received United Nation Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction in 2007 and Distinguished Services Commendation in the field of disaster management, awarded by the Prime Minister in 2009. He is President, Japan Society of Disaster Information since 2009.
