Head ShotBrenda Mackie

Brenda Mackie, a doctoral candidate with the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre, is based at Canterbury University and affiliated with the Joint Centre for Disaster Research, Massey University. Her PhD explores the ‘myth’ of warning fatigue in the context of disasters, uncertainty and risk communication. This builds on her past research on the public health concerns of pandemics (avian and swine influenzas).

Brenda has just participated in a project for BushfireCRC and the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. In the wake of disastrous bushfires in January 2013, NSW RFS wanted to know how their affected communities has used warnings and existing bushfire information to help them make decisions during the fires. Brenda wrote the interview protocol, designed an online survey, analysed the data and was lead author of the final report.

Brenda’s research intersects the disciples of sociology, psychology, risk communication and disaster response; she has a special interest in post-disaster research methodologies. Her home town is Christchurch, New Zealand which has given her a unique and ‘lived’ perspective on post disaster issues.
