Head ShotLori Peek

Lori Peek is Associate Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of the Center for Disaster and Risk Analysis at Colorado State University. Her research focuses on potentially vulnerable populations, with a particular emphasis on the experiences of children and youth, racial and ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, and other groups that tend to have fewer resources before disaster strikes.

Peek is currently involved in several research projects, including a state-wide survey of disaster preparedness among childcare providers in Colorado; a participatory project on youth recovery after the Joplin tornado; a project on the potential mental and physical health effects of the BP Oil Spill on children; a study of risk perception and evacuation behavior in hurricane-prone communities along the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic Coasts; and a global examination of earthquake risk reduction activities. She is author of Behind the Backlash: Muslim Americans after 9/11 and co-editor of Displaced: Life in the Katrina Diaspora.

Peek received the Distinguished Book Award from the Midwest Sociological Society and the Best Book Award from the American Sociological Association Section on Altruism, Morality, and Social Solidarity. In 2009, the American Sociological Association Section on Children and Youth honored her with its Early Career Award for Outstanding Scholarship.
