Head ShotKristina Peterson

Kristina J. Peterson, PhD, senior research associate with the Center for Hazards Assessment, Response and Technology, CHART at the University of New Orleans, has conducted research on historic and contemporary efforts of successful community relocation. She has helped create safe venues for participation and discourse on coastal issues with and for traditional and indigenous Louisiana high-risk coastal communities in Southeast Louisiana. She coordinated a NOAA resiliency project in the Jean Lafitte region and is the current project coordinator on a community planning process funded through the Greater New Orleans Foundation. A summer project with NSF and NCAR enabled Peterson to place three physical science students in community-based projects to help build knowledge in addressing land and cultural loss. A grant received from the Praxis Project will enable communities to build on the NSF-NCAR work to have a more robust presence in food policies as they pertain to the Gulf Coast. A project with USDA-NRCS includes the development of an Inter-tribal Agricultural Council for the Louisiana Tribes.
