Next Generation Oil Spill Researchers builds on the work of the Natural Hazards Center and National Academies’ Gulf Research Program to advance knowledge of the human, economic, and environmental impacts of disasters. We are committed to working with local partners in the Gulf to advance interdisciplinary, community-centered, scientifically rigorous research, and more just, resilient futures for the people of this dynamic region.

Natural Hazards Center

Since 1976, the Natural Hazards Center has served as the National Science Foundation's designated information clearinghouse for the societal dimensions of hazards and disasters. Center activities focus on building connections, translating and sharing hazards and disaster research and information, advancing social science and interdisciplinary knowledge, and training and mentoring a diverse next generation of hazards and disaster professionals. Since 2018, the Center has served as the institutional home for CONVERGE, a National Science Foundation-funded shared-use facility, which offers online training in hazards and disaster research methods to students and scholars across the United States and globally. The CONVERGE network brings together thousands of researchers across disciplines to rapidly collect and share data in the aftermath of disaster. In addition, through our decades-long Research Award Program, the Center has supported more than 500 studies on disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.

Gulf Research Program

The National Academies’ Gulf Research Program (GRP) is an independent, science-based program founded in 2013 as part of legal settlements with the companies involved in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. The GRP’s mission is to develop, translate, and apply science to enhance the safety of offshore energy, the environment, and the wellbeing of the people of the Gulf region for generations to come. It supports innovative science, guides data design and monitoring, and builds and sustains networks to generate long-term benefits for the Gulf region and the nation.

The Next Generation Oil Spill Researchers Community of Practice is funded by the Gulf Research Program at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (Award #SCON-10001452).
