Researchers Meeting

Identifying Research Needs, Coordinating Investigators, and Improving Data Collection and Sharing

The International Research Committee on Disasters and the Natural Hazards Center invite you to join us for a Researchers Meeting on July 11-12 in Broomfield, Colorado. This meeting is scheduled to immediately follow the 43rd Annual Natural Hazards Workshop.

The 2018 Researchers Meeting will focus on improving rapid reconnaissance research and will feature interactive sessions designed to help the community identify pressing research needs, better coordinate researchers and research teams, and improve data collection, sharing, and archiving. The meeting will include plenary and breakout sessions for paper presentations and networking events for participants.

This meeting is open to all members of the hazards and disasters research community, and all researchers are invited and welcome to submit abstracts. This year’s meeting is also designed to convene researchers across disciplines who have recently received National Science Foundation RAPID grants as well as those who have ongoing hazards and disaster related research projects.

Call for Abstracts

Scholarly submissions of hazards and disasters research from all disciplinary perspectives are being accepted for the Researchers Meeting. Abstracts are due May 14, 2018. Presenters will be notified of their acceptance in late May.

Those who are interested in being considered for a panel presentation—and those who wish to have their work featured in the proceedings—should submit a brief abstract that includes the following:

  • Author name(s), title(s), affiliation(s), and email(s)

  • Title of the paper

  • Up to 5 keywords that describe the paper content

  • An abstract that responds to the following two requests:

Please submit a traditional research abstract that describes the research project and highlights the key question or topic, the methods, and the findings. (limit 150 words)

Please submit a response to one of the following four prompts: (limit 150 words)

(1) What challenges or opportunities have you identified in terms of conducting rapid reconnaissance research?

(2) What has your research revealed regarding team formation, rapid reconnaissance research coordination, or interdisciplinary collaboration?

(3) Has your research contributed to innovative data collection strategies? If so, please elaborate.

(4) How can data sharing and archiving capabilities be enhanced to ensure the greatest scientific impact?

Please note that each abstract should feature only one project and respond to only one prompt. If you would like to highlight more than one project, please submit another abstract.

Research abstracts must be submitted by May 14, 2018, to be considered for presentation. All submissions will be included in the printed and online proceedings for the meeting.
