Disaster Management in Indigenous Communities

Wednesday, July 14, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. MDT

Indigenous communities in the United States and Canada face a variety of specific disaster management challenges. Federal assistance—both technical and financial—is often needed to implement mitigation, adaptation, and response activities. This requires that response organizations collaborate effectively with tribal councils, chiefs, and landowners. And when disaster-affected communities are evacuated from their homes, they lose access to community networks, local and land-based resources, and unique cultural practices. Therefore, typical disaster management solutions might need to be adapted in favor of customized plans and resource allocation. This panel will discuss ways to develop policies and strategies that can make disaster planning and response more equitable.
