Helping Hands: Including Community Members as Disaster Experts

Tuesday, July 13, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. MDT

As disaster impacts increase, the next generation of hazards professionals will need all the help they can get—and they can find it in the communities they serve. Taking the time to engage non-expert community members in disaster work not only means there will be more hands on deck when needed, but that disaster planning, preparedness, and recovery efforts reflect the needs and values of community members. Panelists will discuss their experiences with programs that work to educate locals, build environmental sustainability, increase emotional well-being, and strengthen resilience to complex disasters.
