Managing Disaster Data for Social Change

Monday, July 12, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. MDT

Data management systems, modelling, mapping applications, and other information technology can provide robust decision-making resources for those working to reduce disaster risk and build resilience, but they might pose issues, as well. For many, training in the use and application of such information is needed before it can be properly applied. In some cases, especially for small local agencies, the training and tools can be cost prohibitive and overly sophisticated. In others, their use might overshadow information from human-centered sources. This session features panelists who have worked to combine the use of disaster data in a way that can improve social outcomes, provide interdisciplinary training for hazards professionals, and equalize the ways communities respond to and recover from multiple cumulative disasters.
