Policy Progress: A Listening Session on the National Landslide Preparedness Act

Wednesday, July 14, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. MDT

The National Landslide Preparedness Act was signed into law in 2021 and authorizes the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to identify and understand landslide hazards and risks and to improve communication and emergency preparedness by coordinating with a range of entities on landslide hazard issues. The Act also authorizes expansion of USGS cooperation with the National Weather Service for debris-flow warning and authorizes the National Science Foundation to support academic research on landslides. A federal Interagency Coordinating Committee on Landslide Hazards has been established and charged with developing a national strategy to guide the USGS and partners in the implementation of the Act. In this session we seek input from tribal nations, U.S. territories, states, and local governments, as well as from the private, academic, and non-profit sectors on the specific issues, goals, priorities, and actions that should be included in a national-scale program to reduce landslide risk and losses.
