Science in Service of Society: The American Meteorological Society Policy Program

Wednesday, July 14, 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. MDT

In recent months, with government-agency support, American Meteorological Society (AMS) Policy Program early-career professionals have explored challenges associated with the workforce development, recruitment, and retention in Earth observations, science, and services for societal benefit. The studies have looked at needs spanning government, private, and academic sectors, and at physical and social sciences, technology, and interpersonal skills required. Over the same period, they have initiated studies addressing place-based needs for environmental intelligence in the Arctic, the Great Lakes region, coastal resilience in the Gulf of Maine and the Gulf of Mexico, with respect to decision-making broadly as well as managed retreat in the face of hazards. In this session, AMS staff will discuss their findings to date, and connections between success in workforce development and improved societal outcomes. Those in the room will be invited to share similar experiences and perspectives.
