Support for the Next Generation From the National Academies: Gulf Research Program and LabX

Tuesday, July 13, 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. MDT

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has long supported diverse coalitions of people involved in hazards and disasters. This session will highlight two such efforts—the Gulf Research Program Early-Career Research Fellowship and LabX’s Extreme Event game. The Gulf Research Program provides unrestricted funding and mentoring to emerging scientific leaders, allowing them to take risks on research ideas and pursue unconventional collaborations that strengthen the well-being of coastal communities and ecosystems, particularly the Gulf of Mexico region and Alaska.

LabX is a public engagement testbed that boldly experiments with a variety of creative–sometimes even unorthodox–approaches designed to reach diverse audiences. Their Extreme Event game works to empower individuals and communities to understand, investigate, and collaborate on disaster impacts in an engaging, research-based way. Participants in both programs will discuss their experiences.
