The Value of Relationships in Hazards and Disaster Work

Tuesday, July 13, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. MDT

The inability to reduce long-term hazard risk is more of a social problem than a technical problem. Many decisions we make (or fail to make) in this area are tied to the power and values embedded in our relationships and social constructs. By discussing these realities, analyzing disparities, and sharing our stories with one another, we can create a disaster workforce that has the relationship skills to be more successful at reducing risk and achieving equitable outcomes. Panelists in this session will focus on how to be more deliberate, thoughtful, and compassionate as we work together to create safer communities for everyone.
