Listening Session: Taking Stock and Taking Action—Using Disaster Loss Information for Risk Reduction

Sunday, July 10, 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. MDT

Disaster loss information offers valuable insights into pressing issues such as climate change and disparities in hazard exposure that shape both practice and policy. But it’s not always clear how this information is used for disaster risk reduction. To this end, members of the United Nations Office of Disaster Risk Reduction have asked all member states, including the United States, to assess progress, gaps, and challenges of collecting and using disaster loss information at the local and national levels. Incorporating diverse perspectives, this listening session will draw from conversation with panelists and audience members to take stock of current efforts to collect and use disaster loss information across a variety of contexts and highlight future opportunities for disaster risk reduction.
