Coalition-Driven Research: Insights from Campaigns to End Inhumane Incarceration in a Changing Climate

Panel Session
Monday, June 15, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Interlocken A

From sweltering heat to bitter cold, people in prisons and jails are exposed to extreme weather in environments of constrained agency, substandard infrastructure, restrictive and often cruel rules, and limited health care access. In response, local and national coalitions are emerging to end inhumane incarceration practices in a rapidly changing climate. This session will feature a dynamic panel of formerly incarcerated individuals, researchers, and advocates who will share their approach to developing collaborative research projects and advocacy efforts that are explicitly guided by—and accountable to—incarcerated individuals and their family members. They’ll also share insights from their coalition-building approaches, which blend lived experience, research expertise, community organizing, and policy advocacy to advance climate justice.
