Enhancing Education and Training for Disaster Risk Reduction
Training Session
Sunday, June 14, 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Interlocken A
Pursuing strong and effective local hazard mitigation requires robust knowledge and skillsets to integrate science, navigate policy, and engage a wide variety of stakeholders. To that end, the National Hazard Mitigation Association is developing a comprehensive hazard mitigation training program to support both practitioners and community leaders in the continuous improvement of hazard mitigation. The curriculum draws on a set of defined core competencies and project experience to help trainees to understand local hazards, identify and empower organized groups and programs, and inform local governments and at-risk populations in support of disaster risk reduction and more effective recovery. This session will focus on recent updates and improvements to the National Hazards Mitigation Association’s Disaster Risk Reduction Curriculum, with an initial focus on modules that align the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s hazard mitigation training modules and identified training priorities. Panelists will share highlights from the curriculum and efforts to expand its target audience and opportunities for course delivery.
