Establishing a Unified Approach for Disaster Data Collection
Panel Session
Tuesday, June 16, 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Interlocken C
Effective disaster management requires robust data to identify and assess risk, reduce exposure and vulnerability, and measure the success of resilience building strategies. But in the context of disaster reconnaissance, a prevailing challenge is the lack of standardized, interdisciplinary strategies for data collection and integration. Without agreed upon tools and established best practices for gathering standardized information, researchers and practitioners are limited in their ability to communicate and cooperate. This panel will discuss data as a foundation for effective community resilience strategies and improved disaster response and recovery efforts. Panelists will share their experiences and knowledge gained from post-disaster reconnaissance following hurricanes, tornadoes, and other major events and explore possibilities to establish a more unified framework to disaster data.
