Rural Strengths and Capacities for Flood Resilience

Research, Practice, and Policy Session
Sunday, June 14, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Interlocken C

More frequent and intense riverine flooding is a pressing threat to rural communities that may have limited resources to dedicate to flood mitigation, response, and sustainable recovery. Even still, rural places also have unique strengths and capacities that can contribute to successful coalition building. Culvert Crawlers—a network of academic researchers, community scientists, state employees, and mutual aid organizers in rural Vermont—is a program that engages the local community in stormwater infrastructure monitoring to improve flood resilience. Panelists will discuss how the conditions of rural places, including tight-knit communities and the necessity to simultaneously fill multiple roles, laid the foundations for this successful citizen science initiative.
