Sharing and Co-Creating Disaster Scholarship Through Zines

Training Session
Sunday, June 14, 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Interlocken A

Traditional academic outputs often fail to reach frontline communities who need information about disaster preparedness and response that’s not hidden in paywalled journals or couched in academic jargon. Zines—self-published booklets—offer a powerful format to democratize disaster scholarship. They are cheap to produce, easy to distribute, and can communicate complex information alongside personal narratives and community voices—reaching people who otherwise cannot access information they need. This session brings together researchers and practitioners who use zines for knowledge of co-creation. Participants will create their own mini-zines during the session, learning basic layout and production techniques to transform disaster research, preparedness information, or practice knowledge into accessible formats.
