Women of Invention: Pioneering Contributions to Hazards Research and Its Applications
Concurrent Session
Monday, June 15, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. MDT
Location: Centennial F
This session will describe the lineage and contributions of pioneering and next generation women researchers in the field of hazards and disaster research. The moderators will open with a description of their recent paper, Grandmothers of Invention, which highlights the key roles that several women played in advancing research in the realms of vulnerability, intersectionality, resilience, and policy. Their opening remarks will be followed by a discussion where panelists will reflect on the motivations for their research, their experiences and challenges navigating a male-dominated field, and their efforts to support and uplift the next generation of diverse researchers and practitioners. They’ll also consider the transformational changes that women have made to theory, research, and emergency management practice.
