The Gilbert F. White Graduate Research Fellowship in Natural Hazards Mitigation

While watching the German occupation of France I became convinced that man can no more conquer or preserve a civilization by war than he can conquer nature solely by engineering force. I found that an occupying army or a concentration camp can repress men's basic beliefs but cannot change them.

Named after the center's founder and long-time mentor, the Gilbert F. White Graduate Research Fellowship in Natural Hazards Mitigation will honor Gilbert by reflecting his life-long dedication to educating graduate students and furthering knowledge and research regarding ways to alleviate the human suffering caused by natural hazards. The fellowship will ensure that hazards mitigation remains a central concern of graduate education and academic scholarship at the University of Colorado. It will be open to any graduate student in a relevant social science discipline. The fellow will serve as a research assistant at the university's Natural Hazards Center.

In May of 2001, a representative of the State Farm Fire and Casualty Insurance Company and State Farm General Insurance Company launched this campaign by presenting a check for $100,000 to the university to establish this fellowship.
