Disaster Preparedness for Schools
Friday, 2:00-3:30 p.m., Fir
From the 2008 Wenchuan, China, earthquake that destroyed 7,000 school rooms to the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, which killed 17,000 school children, recent disasters have highlighted the need for disaster preparedness in schools. Other disasters affecting all levels of education—including the 2007 Southern California wildfires and the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings—will be explored in this session. Panelists will discuss lessons learned about school-based emergency plans, safe evacuation, drills, and mitigation opportunities.
