A Survey of Ethical Issues in Disaster Research

Saturday, 8:30-10:00 a.m., Interlocken C

The very nature of disaster research requires work in severely traumatized communities, therefore discussions of ethics in hazards research are critical. After surveying existing ethical approaches to disaster research, this session will explicitly discuss outstanding ethical issues.

What are researchers taking from communities versus contributing? To what extent should researchers reflect the diversity of the communities they research? What are the implication of issues of power between researchers and vulnerable communities? This session will conclude with a discussion of the potential for enhancement of ethical standards for post-disaster research.
