John Gaynor is director of the Office of Weather and Air Quality in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. His responsibilities include the implementation of the U.S. Weather Research Program (USWRP), a cooperative program that supports research directed toward accelerating the improvements in forecasts of high impact weather such as hurricanes and other severe storms. Gaynor is also responsible for national and international planning and coordination of the Observing-System Research and Predictability Experiment (THORPEX), a global atmospheric research program, and contributes to general weather research prioritization and planning at NOAA. He oversees the Societal Impacts Program, a weather-related societal and economic impacts activity, and is active on the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy Subcommittee for Disaster Reduction (SDR) under the Committee for Environment and Natural Resources. He serves on the advisory committee for the Natural Hazards Center and on the advisory board of the National Academies Disasters Roundtable.

Within the SDR, Gaynor led the creation of an interagency Wind Hazard Reduction Program implementation plan and a series of grand challenges implementation strategies for severe weather, including hurricanes. He is an active member of the American Meteorological Society, having served on several committees and assisting in leading the organization of meeting sessions and forums.  He is also a member of the US-Japan Panel on Wind and Seismic Effects, co-chairing the Task Committee on Wind Engineering.
