Douglas Pattie, Senior Advisor, UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), works on a number of problems confronting sustainable agriculture in the arid and semiarid lands including dryland commodity issues, desertification control, environmental security and migration, and early warning systems for drought risk management. His research assignments have included the promotion of traditional knowledge for disaster reduction, participatory GIS for vulnerability and disaster risk reduction, mapping land cover dynamics, community-based fire management, and indicators of change in drylands.

Before joining the UNCCD, Pattie served in the secretariat of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction as coordinator of early warning, as well as a tour as environmental affairs officer with the UNCCD. He has also served as a projects manager with the International Tropical Timber Organization in Yokohama, Japan where he dealt with forest industry issues in Asia, Africa and Latin America.  His most recent publication is on the topic of human migration and environmental security in Springer-Verlag’s 2008 edition of “Facing Global Environmental Change: Environmental, Human, Energy, Food, Health and Water Security Concepts.” He holds a PhD from Colorado State University.
