Motivating Local Governments to Reduce Hazards Risks

Which policies, tools, and incentives encourage meaningful community-driven efforts to reduce risks? Do we know what makes local governments act to mitigate hazards? These questions are particularly relevant as we observe the tenth anniversary of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, which marked a significant change in policy by requiring that communities plan for disaster and reduce risks. What can be learned from the efforts to implement the DMA, and has it made any difference? This session will explore these questions and discuss a variety of strategies for encouraging hazards mitigation by local governments.
