The Internationalization of the Incident Command System

The Incident Command System began in the 1970’s as a way to manage multi-agency response to California wildfires. Since that time, ICS has evolved to become a disaster management "best practice" in the United States and is on its way to becoming a global standard. For example, ICS has been adopted as the official disaster response tool in India, and is used in some form in much of South Asia, Australia, South Africa, and parts of Latin America. This session will discuss whether ICS is the best tool for the job and how it might be improved, considering both our current understanding of disasters and organizations and experience with its application worldwide.
