Are We Ready for an Earthquake Impact Scale?

Neither earthquake magnitude nor macroseismic intensity provide sufficient information to judge the overall impact of an earthquake on people and structures. Although rapid earthquake assessments can now be made, communicating impact is hampered by the lack of an appropriate lexicon. We discuss a proposed Earthquake Impact Scale to help facilitate rapid and appropriate earthquake response. In this session we will provide background on rapid earthquake loss estimation and the need for an EIS, and allow discussion and feedback on EIS usability and suitability from different users' perspectives.
