David JohnstonDavid Johnston

David Johnston is a senior scientist at GNS Science (New Zealand’s geological survey) and director of the Joint Centre for Disaster Research in the School of Psychology at Massey University, Wellington. The Centre is a joint venture between Massey University and GNS Science. His research has developed as part of a multidisciplinary theoretical and applied research program, involving the collaboration of physical and social scientists from several organizations and countries.

Johnston’s research focuses on human responses to volcano, tsunami, and weather warnings, crisis decision-making, and the role of public education and participation in building community resilience and recovery. He is a member of the Scientific Committee for the Joint International Council for Science, the International Social Science Council Integrated Research on Disaster Risk, and the Royal Society Social Science Advisory Panel. Johnston also sits on the editorial board of The Australasian Journal of Disaster and Trauma Studies and serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Applied Volcanology.
