Steve Szoke is director of codes and standards for the Portland Cement Association in Skokie, Illinois. He is a registered professional engineer in Virginia and the District of Columbia, as well as a U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional.

His accomplishments and activities related to sustainability include past chair and honorary member of the Sustainable Building Industry Council; International Code Council Sustainable Buildings Technology Committee which developed of the draft version of the International Green Construction Code; ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability; and ACI Committee 122 Energy Efficiency of Concrete and Masonry Systems.

Szoke is a strong proponent for the enhancement of the functional resilience as integral to high performance buildings and has served on the National Institute of Building Sciences High Performance Building Council. Szoke developed and implemented the High Performance Building Requirements for Sustainability, a comprehensive strategy to integrate increased durability and disaster resistance along with the more typical aspects of sustainable building design and construction. These requirements are uniquely compiled in mandatory language as modifications to the most widely adopted model building code, the International Code Council’s International Building Code for ease of adoption and enforcement. The requirements are intended to minimize negative impacts and conserve resources for individual projects, communities and the natural environment.
