William H. Hooke directs the American Meteorological Society’s Policy Program. Educated as an atmospheric scientist, he worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 1967-2000 in a series of research and management positions, including deputy chief scientist and acting chief scientist. He also served as senior scientist to Commerce Secretary William Daley. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2006.

From 1993-2000, Hooke chaired the National Science and Technology Council’s Interagency Subcommittee on Natural Disaster Reduction. He chaired the National Academy of Science/National Research Council Disasters Roundtable from 2003-2009. He served on the International Council for Science’s Planning Group on Natural and Human-Induced Environmental Hazards and Disasters from 2006-2008.

He chaired the NAS/NRC Committee on Private-Public Collaboration to Build Community Disaster Resilience from 2009-2010.
