Head ShotKevin Lynott

Kevin Lynott is the Meteorologist-in-Charge at the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Riverton, Wyoming. Lynott is an alumnus of the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (90) in Earth Science. He’s been in the NWS since 1990, including 5 years working at NWS Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. His background includes Mountain Meteorology and Hydrology.

When Lynott arrived at the Riverton NWS in 2007, he took a strong interest in Fire Weather. Shortly thereafter, Kevin and his Warning Coordination Meteorologist began an initiative to help prepare communities from Wildfires through improved communication and overall heightened awareness of this high impact threat. The initiative or program is called Community Wildfire Awareness, and it has evolved since 2008. As the title indicates, this is a program designed to promote wildfire awareness and the protection of lives and property.

The NWS has been very busy with a high fire danger and many wildfires just this (2012) season alone. Currently, two Counties/Communities in Wyoming are recognized as NWS Community Wildfire Awareness. Lynott and his office goals are to expand this certification program throughout the National Weather Service, and work with local, state and national groups in efforts to share ideas and find common interests with other programs focused on safety in the wildland-urban interface (WUI).
