Marcus MoenchMarcus Moench

Since 1984, Marcus Moench has published and worked on a broad array of water and climate issues globally and at the field level in South Asia and other regions. He founded the Institute for Social and Environmental Transition in 1997 and serves as its chief executive officer.

Moench has extensive experience coordinating large-scale interdisciplinary regional programs that involve multiple government, donor research, and implementation partners. Major programs under his guidance include:

  • Building Resilience to Climate Change in Asian Cities (Rockefeller Foundation)
  • Climate Change and Adaptation in the Nepal Himalaya (IDRC, DFID, NOAA)
  • Adaptation Knowledge Gap Review for China, South-East Asia, and South Asia (IDRC with support from DFID)
  • The Costs and Benefits of Disaster Risk Reduction under Changing Climate Conditions (DFID)
  • Climate Information in Local Planning (NOAA) Adaptive Capacity and Livelihood Resilience (OFDA & State Department)
  • Reviews of Groundwater in India (Ford Foundation)
  • Decentralized Water Management in Yemen (World Bank)
  • Local Water Management in India and Nepal (IDRC)
  • India Water Sector Review, Groundwater Component (World Bank & Government of India).

Moench received his doctorate from the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California Berkeley in 1990.
