Resilience in Practice

For more than a decade, we have heard about various ways of defining and measuring community and disaster resilience. During the course of these discussions and analyses (which have taken place in institutions such as the Department of Homeland Security and the National Academey of Sciences, as well as at conferences, workshops and in journals, books, and the popular press) much has been learned about resilience concepts and indicators.

Despite that progress, less is known about the practical aspects of actually increasing disaster resilience at the community level and about the challenges faced by those who attempt it. This plenary, which features speakers who work on building community resilience, will examine resilience-enhancing efforts, indicate what works well and what doesn't, review lessons learned, and identify questions that still remain in this important area.
