Byron Mason is a Program Analyst in the Division of Recovery at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response. He has been heavily involved in the development of the Health and Social Services Recovery Support Function Annex to the National Disaster Recovery Framework and coordinated federal support for health and social services needs in New Jersey following Hurricane Sandy.

Mr. Mason joined HHS in December 2011, after nearly five years with FEMA’s Public Assistance Directorate’s Regulations and Policy Branch. While at FEMA, he staffed the National Response Coordination Center as the Infrastructure Support Branch Director during the 2007 California Wildfires, in advance of Hurricane Dolly (2008); during the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, and following the 2009 tsunami in American Samoa. Mr. Mason helped lead recovery field operations following the 2008 Cedar Rapids, Iowa flooding; and Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in Louisiana and Texas.

Prior to joining the federal government, Mr. Mason worked at the National Academy of Sciences as a program associate in the Division on Earth and Life Studies. He staffed the Division’s Ocean Studies Board and Disasters Roundtable and supported research on natural hazards and disasters, marine science, and climate change.

Mr. Mason earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology at the University of Florida and a Masters in Legislative Affairs at the George Washington University.
