Head ShotSusan King

Susan B. King has been described as an interdisciplinary visionary and advocate. For the last 10 years, she has concentrated her efforts on describing the need for a targeted, integrated public warning system and building a grassroots coalition to establish and support one.

King holds three degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison: a juris doctor from the Law School, where she was Notes and Comment editor of the Wisconsin Law Review; a master’s in urban and regional planning; and a master’s in public policy and administration.

After practicing business and intellectual property law for 20 years, she became executive vice president and general counsel of Alert Systems Inc., a company founded by emergency managers to modernize public warning and shared information systems.

In 2007, she co-authored the study “Decision Support for Pandemic Planning” for the State of Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Division of Health. In her role as University of Wisconsin’s Center for Human Performance and Risk Analysis advisory board member, she has worked with a variety of industries to organize a conference on pandemic planning. A former state and local official, she has served in the Wisconsin Office of Management and Budget and as an appointed city and county commissioner in city planning, public housing, urban redevelopment, and parks.
