Estimating Long-Term Displacement from Catastrophic Hurricanes

Given the potential severity of the household displacement problem from catastrophic hurricanes, it is important to find points of intervention in the causal chain between a catastrophic disaster and long-term displacement. This session presents the conceptualization and operationalization of, and preliminary findings from, a household displacement index constructed as a function of vulnerability, resilience, capacity, and exposure. The index's planning and policy implications for practitioners who deal with hurricane and other catastrophic disasters, as well as the need for dialogue between researchers, practitioners, and policy makers about the displacement process will be discussed
